A bright, shiny surface tells you very little about whether a bar meets its specification. Here are five checks that matter far more than visual appearance.
1. Diameter and Ovality
Diameter should be checked at multiple points along the bar length — not just at one end — using calibrated micrometers or a snap gauge. Ovality (the difference between the maximum and minimum diameter at a single cross-section) matters just as much as the nominal size, particularly for bars going into bearings or bushings.
2. Straightness
Bar straightness is typically checked over a defined length (for example, deviation per metre). Bars that are out of straightness can cause chatter during CNC turning, uneven stock removal, and premature tool wear.
3. Surface Finish
For ground bars, surface roughness (Ra) should be measured with a profilometer, not judged by eye. A visually shiny bar can still fall outside the required Ra value.
4. Mechanical Properties
Hardness testing (and tensile testing where required) confirms the bar's grade and processing history match the order specification — especially important after cold working, which changes mechanical properties from the base black bar.
5. Chemical Composition Verification
Particularly for critical or fatigue-loaded applications, verifying chemistry against the mill certificate (and periodically through spectrometric testing) ensures the grade supplied actually matches the grade ordered.
The Takeaway
None of these checks are visible from the outside. When evaluating a bright bar supplier, ask what's actually being measured and documented at each stage — not just whether the bar looks bright and clean.
